Duties and Responsibilities:

Working with one or two other trained employees, you would:

  • Support (cue) the Residents with their grooming needs: eg. Remind them of bathing schedule, shaving, provide clean clothing choices by completing laundry tasks, and putting away clothing in Residents’ closets/dressers.
  • Support the Residents with their dietary requirements by following the SCH’s (Special Care Home’s) menus, preparing and cooking their meals on the SCH’s established schedule; eg. Peeling the vegetables, and making desserts, on the night shift; cooking and serving their dinner on the evening shift.
  • Support the Residents’ needs for shelter and rest by following the SCH’s established routines for cleaning, bed changes, and cuing for bedtime.
  • Support the Residents’ need for avoidance of pain, physical well being, and mental health stability, by administering medications, in accordance with the SCH’s training program, and completion of the Vickers’ HCA course.
  • Support the Residents’ needs for independence, and social interaction by cuing them in their preparations to attend work programs in the community: eg. Ensuring they are ready for their transportation, have their lunch prepared, and mentally prepared to have a positive day.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by management based on the Department of Social Development’s Standards and Procedures for Adult Residential Facilities.

Job requirements:

  • A clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check from the police agency in your home town/city.
  • Have a valid First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Pass a Prior Contact Check conducted by the Department of Social Development
  • Hold a certificate from one of the following courses:
    • Home Support Worker
    • Special Care Home Worker
    • Health Care Aide
    • Human Services
    • Nursing Assistant
    • Personal Support Worker Program if recognized by the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, or be willing to take Vickers Distance Education’s Health Care Aide for Special Care Homes course when hired.
